2 Stars Has some real shortcomings
Well folks, my wife bought me this unit for Christmas and I was pretty excited about it until I started looking at it in detail. I never mounted it on the bike so I can’t testify as to how well it actually works. It has one HUGE fault that I couldn’t live with so I returned it this morning. This unit has no audio out jack. I ride a Yamaha Royal Star Venture that has a factory audio system. I already have stereo, intercom, etc. complete with rider and passenger headsets. Most GPS units have an audio out jack and I could simply run a patch cord from that jack to the aux input jack on my bike’s audio system. The TomTom rider has only bluetooth audio out and comes with a bluetooth headset. That means that I would have to use THEIR headset which does not connect with my bikes audio system and then would also have to buy a bluetooth headset for my wife’s helmet. Plus, the headset that comes with the unit is not stereo so I would have to find stereo bluetooth headsets for both our helmets. I don’t know what TomTom was thinking. Most touring bikes, including the Venture, Goldwing, Ultra Classic come from the factory with audio. Without a standard audio out jack, this unit will be non-acceptable to many of us. I returned it for a refund and will buy a Garmin Zumo 450 or 550.
UPDATE: I replaced this unit with a Garmin Zumo 550. It is twice the unit at only a very slight increase in price. I found the Zumo online for about $50.00 more than my wife paid for the TomTom and the Garmin is a MUCH better unit and has an audio out jack to work with motorcycles that already have audio systems. TomTom is close but just didn’t think this one out.

If you have ever used TomTom before, you will catch on to this in a snap. If not, playing around with the settings and controls will get you comfortable quickly.
Good- Precise directions most of the time. Quick sync w/ satellites. New computer software easy to use. Headset works surprisingly well.
Not so good- Concerned on the actual strength of motorcycle mount. Seems a little cheaper than I think it should. Time will tell if the braces snap in half though. Once installed, power cable and all, the mount is meant to be left in place. I do not use GPS every day, I wish there was a solution to being able to remove and hide the power cable without being unsightly.
Bad- Expensive! I got a bargain on this, and it is still much more expensive than standard GPS products. Also as a consideration, you need the car mount kit to get audio while in the car, which then must be plugged in to power the speaker at all times.
5 Stars Best routing algorithms in the business
This is my second Tom-Tom. I previously used Garmin and Magellan. Tom-Tom is a giant leap above them for utility and routing algorithms. The motorcycle version is perfect for the rough and gloved environment of touring.

While I have not had a chance to fully test this used unit out, it seems to be perfectly fine, as advertised and arrived very quickly.

I have a older car gps and love the new features of the rider 2. Motorcycle mounts were easy and it is very secure. A friend of mine has a Garmin and the only major difference is the Garmin has the ability to play mp3 files and connect to XM Radio. I read a lot of reviews and came to the conclusion the Tom Tom is the way to go because it is half the price and is a quality gps!!

This is an excellent protection for the Garmin when it is removed from the car. I believe that everyone who has a portable Garmin should invest in one. I can put the Garmin in my purse without worrying about it getting damaged.

I got it because it was included. I love the GPS but the case real cheap. I use a camera case, and it works great. Make sure when buying the garmin to get the AC adapter also. You will be glad you did.

Good case for the price. Only drawback is no place to keep your cables and mount if you want to take everything with you, but it is very nice for simply protecting the touch screen.

5 Stars A *MUST* for long range use
Most of the time your dog will be nearby when hunting, but garmin made the exception knowing that you may have a quad runner or 4WD and the rubber duck will be woefully inadequate and kill off your range.
When I bought my Astro it was only doing about .3 miles in the CITY - I measured the power out of the transmitter and had to send it back for repair, which brought it to about .67 miles. That’s with the unit in my hand out the window of the car to get a signal, so I bought this antenna.
Range is now 1.77 miles - almost 3 times what it used to be! and that is CITY usage - taking it to the country went well over 4 miles. If you use any sort of motor vehicle and let your dog(s) roam, this is a must to find them.
The fit and finish of this is very well done - it meets all my expectations and is designed around garmin’s antenna interface.
I was surprised Amazon stocked this but very pleased they did. Recently alot of electronics have disappeared to outsourced stores off amazon making orders hard to put together without paying shipping for each item because 4 vendors get involved. Cudos to amazon for stocking the accessories that make a product SO much more useful!

My problem is not with this unit…my problem is with “Crutchfield”! The average price for this item is $350. Crutchfield is asking $799!! Over twice as much!!! Crutchfield doesn’t want to sell this as an indivdual unit. Crutchfield wants to bundle it with outdated head units. The problem is…Crutchfield is keeping the price high for everyone else. BACKOFF CRUTCHFIELD!!! Lower your price or stop selling this unit!!!!!

I have the Kenwood KNA-G510 Nav. hooked up to the New 2009
Kenwood KVT-514 DVD receiver. The Nav. is surpurbe, like a Garmin should be. There are other receivers out there that offer navigation, but you can’t beat Kenwood and Garmin’s track record. I doint have the Bluetooth conected yet, but I understand when you are looking up a place of business(Restaurant) You can press on the phone number and it will dial the phone number of the place (very cool). I think this is a GREAT product and will add one to my other car as well.
1 word of CAUTION…KENWOOD ONLY HONORS THERE WARRANTY IF YOU BUY FROM THEIR AUTHORIZED DEALERS..(Crutchfield).

This product is everything that it was advertised to be. My wife loves the product and finds it much easier to use than previous Kenwood versions. I am a Garmin fan and love the ability to upgrade the maps with software upgrades as opposed to the DVD versions. I would highly recommend this product.

I got this for my 07 Sport Trac. As soon as I got the car I dumped the standard stereo for a Kenwood 6019 but didn’t get the Nav part until recently. Now I have it I can’t believe I waited so long, I bet we save the price of the Nav in Fuel because now my girlfriend isn’t getting lost any more!!!!!

3 Stars Kinda cool, but that wears off fast
I’ve had the unit for about a week now, and for the most part it’s a good unit. I love the fact that you can get a route mapped out using only a street name, an intersection, or even just a zip code (in the latter case it will route you to the center of the zip code’s geographic area).
You can also pick from several different color schemes for the display. Displays are crisp and offer a choice between 2D and 3D. One complaint about the 2D: Some major roads disappear from the display too early as you zoom out.
The main reason most people will purchase this unit is because of the KITT voice. William Daniels recorded a number of phrases for the unit. You can even pick from among 300 or so first names with which “KITT” can greet you. However, if you do choose the Kitt voice, you won’t get actual street names when it routes you. Instead you can expect things like “Turn left in 350 feet.” That can get a little confusing in densely built subdivions and you end up having to watch the 3D map much more closely for guidance. Not good if you’re also driving.
Given the price of the unit compared to other units with similar features, it’s apparent that you’re paying a major premium for that voice. Too bad it also limits the unit’s abilities.
There are a quite a few other voices available from the Mio website. Those are synthesized and will give you street names as part of the turn-by-turn directions. On the other hand, that also largely defeats the purpose of having a Knight Rider GPS.
Aside from the whole KITT voice thing, what prompted me to buy this unit was the available traffic module available on Mio’s website. It plugs into the USB port on the bottom that normally takes the AC adapter cord. Then the power cord plugs into the other end of that. A separate thin wire then plugs into the module, and you have to run that across the dash and along the windshield.
The traffic service is provided by an outfit called TMC, and they are next to worthless. They supposedly cover the DC area, but as it turns out, their coverage of Northern Virginia is very limited. You start losing the traffic updates about five or six miles outside of the Capital Beltway. Given this area’s sprawl, that’s a severe limitation.
Also, looking at the display, it’s impossible to immediately tell which direction is backed up on an interstate. You have to zoom down to a level where you’re looking at less than a two mile section of highway before you can differentiate between the east bound and west bound lanes. There are little tiny arrows that are supposed to do that for you, but they sometimes conflict with one another. Very confusing.
I don’t know about the other traffic services out there, but the one provided by TMC is next to worthless.
Even worse, when I called Mio to return the module, I was told that once it is activated, it can NOT be returned. I tried to point out that I had ordered the item in good faith expecting a quality product, but they wouldn’t take it back
Also, some other reviews I had read complained about the out of date maps. One review, however, said that Mio will provide a free 2009 map update when it becomes available.
When I tried to sign up for it on their website, I discovered that the offer had expired on January 20, 2009. It let me sign up for the offer, but the next day I got an email telling me I wasn’t eligible because I had purchased the unit on January 26.

Received the Knight Rider GPS that I ordered for a gift. It came VERY fast and everything was fine. My daughter LOVED it as she loved watching that show when she was growing up! Actually I think she liked Michael more than Kitt but the show wouldn’t have been the same without Kitt in it!
5 Stars Just needs turbo boost
I was lucky enough to get this as a Christmas gift. I love it!
There are some great features:
1. Sounds like KITT.
2. You can select the street you want to get to without needing a house number. Believe it or not, this has come in handy.
3. You can set an alert. If your speed exceeds the limit you program, the GPS lights up and a tone sounds. Nice way to watch your speed without the cruise control. Shame they didn’t program it for KITT to say something catchy instead of just the tone though.
4. The unit and display both look great.
The only negatives I have with the unit are:
1. Won’t keep a charge. You’ll need this plugged in when you use it.
2. When the unit is in the window mount, it is difficult to connect the power cord. You’ll know if it’s not plugged in completely because you’ll get a low power warning and it will turn off.
If you’re a fan of the original Knight Rider series and you need a GPS, treat yourself to some fun and go with the Mio Knight Rider GPS.

This Knight Rider GPS system is great! I love the voice and that you can find your name on a huge list of pre-loaded names. It works very accurately, and it is in sync with your vehicle moving down the road.
I highly recommend this product for the Knight Rider fanatic! It’s an awesome addition to any vehicle!
2 Stars So sorry I bought this as a gift
I purchased this GPS unit for my son for Christmas and within 2 weeks it completely stopped working. If that wasn’t bad enough when he reached customer service to get some assistance on shipping it back to the manufacturer they were less than cooperative and not willing to admit they may have an inferior product. It is very disheartening as a consumer to purchase items in good faith and when they do not work the manufacturer is not willing to extend that same good faith and replace the product. As of to date, the whole situation is not completely resolved but no matter the outcome I am sorry I purchased this item.
